Kalamazoo

The ground the project is written, edited, and run from — and the ground a pharmaceutical empire crushed its first pill into. The Means of Production is based here; so was The Upjohn Company. What follows is the index of the work rooted in the place.

A river town in southwest Michigan, equidistant from two larger ideas of itself. In 1886 a doctor here patented a pill soft enough to crush under a thumb — proof, he said, that the medicine would actually dissolve.

The friable pill built a company; the company built a habit of turning what the body does into something the body owes. The work on the board reads that ground from several angles.

The Board

A living elegy in eight eras. One city remembered eight times — 1855 to 2050 — the river, Burdick Street, Bronson Park, the rail line, the celery flats, each holding its coordinates while only time moves. Walk it, and meet the hand-written residents who carry the city's real history.

The Sins of Kalamazoo three.js · reverie
Sins built here until 1954, when the sin factory moved south — leaving behind poisoned ground, poisoned water, and poisoned people. Carl Sandburg's 1920 elegy, rebuilt as a slow ride from a train-car window past the smokestacks, the fog, and the bronze hounds on the public square.
