Ten of your eighteen lines are the refrain and nothing else; an eleventh carries it inside a sentence. That is not a criticism — it is the poem’s whole architecture, and I want to describe it accurately before saying anything else, because it is easy to mistake for padding.

Here is the thing I did not expect. The refrain is the same two words every time, and it is punctuated differently almost every time:

Pitter patter, pitter patter . — comma, then a space before the stop
Pitter patter pitter patter — no punctuation at all
Pitter patter, pitter patter. — comma, stop closed up
Pitter patter pitter patter . — no comma, space before the stop
Pitter patter pitter patter. — no comma, stop closed up
Pitter patter, pitter patter, — comma with no space, and no stop

Six different notations for one identical sound. Whether that is deliberate or whether it is what happens when a hand writes the same phrase eleven times, the effect is exact: rain is a sound that never repeats itself precisely, and the page has recorded it with a slightly different mark each time.

The one place the machinery does something else is line 4:

Petrichor accompany with Sense of euphoria Pitter patter, pitter patter .

That is the only line where the chant does not get a line of its own — it arrives inside a statement, unannounced, with no punctuation to let it in. And the stanza it sits in is the only five-line stanza in the poem. The chant breaks ranks once, and the stanza swells to hold it.

Where I press: the statement lines have no cadence holding them together. They run from two words to thirteen, and the longest one in the poem — Blessed rain like a new gray making the filtration system of soil more appreciable — arrives in a register the refrain cannot absorb. The refrain is doing all the structural work, and it can carry a lot, but not a sentence six times the length of the one before it. I would ask whether that line wants to be two.

AR

This is a monsoon poem, and I do not think the machinery around it should be read as generic weather.

The tell is Mankind keep on waiting of you whole year. Nobody waits a whole year for rain that comes whenever. That line only makes sense in a place where the rain arrives once, on a season, and everything depends on it — and once you read it that way the rest of the vocabulary stops being decorative. Giving us the reservoir of water is storage. The filtration system of soil is groundwater recharge. The poem is describing an annual resupply, in the language of the utility it becomes.

Which is why Rain rain please be gentle for us is the most serious line here. A person who has waited a year does not ask for less rain. They ask for the same rain, slower — because the thing that arrives after the wait is also the thing that floods. That single word gentle is holding both the need and the danger, and it is the only request in the poem.

And note what instrument is available for making it. Not a dam, not a warning, not a policy: please. The one thing the speaker can do about an annual event that decides the year is ask it politely. That is an accurate account of the position, and the poem does not pretend otherwise.

ML

The first line is not a sentence. It is a label:

Melancholy suppressor.

Two words, no verb, a full stop — the way a class of drug is written on a box. And then the poem administers the dose: twenty-two instances of the same four beats, eleven lines of them, for the rest of the page.

What I notice is where the chant arrives. Every time the vocabulary reaches for something large — Melancholy, euphoria, filtration system, rainbow canvas — the next thing on the page is the refrain. The poem gets near a big word and immediately returns to the smallest sound it knows. That is not a failure of nerve. That is what a person does with a rhythm: you hold on to the count because the count is manageable and the feeling is not.

The other thing I would keep is what you did to the nursery rhyme. Everyone knows Rain rain go away, come again another day — a spell for getting rid of it. You wrote Rain rain please be gentle for us, which keeps the shape of the children’s line and reverses what it wants. The rain is not being sent away. It is being asked to stay and be kind. That is a different childhood, and a different relationship to weather, and it is the most original moment in the poem.

Myth-Making

Why it is here, and what it reaches for

The myth it reaches for

Rain as a therapeutic agent

Pitter patter enters the Archive as eighteen lines in five stanzas, ten of them nothing but a repeated refrain: a poem about rain that spends most of its length being the sound of rain.

The myth it exposes is stated in its first two words: that rain is medicine. Melancholy suppressor is written as a drug class, not a description, and the poem then delivers the treatment by repetition — the chant returning every time the language approaches a feeling too big to hold. What makes this more than sentiment is that the poem is not describing relief from a distance. It is performing the mechanism, which is that a small repeated sound makes a large one bearable.

Beneath it runs the myth the fourth stanza requires: that the weather can be asked. Rain rain please be gentle for us is a petition addressed to a system that does not take petitions, and the archive records it as a dependency rather than a finding, because the poem needs the request to be possible in order to end well.

Its symbols are the equipment of a season. The refrain is the poem’s own regulating device, six different notations for one unvarying sound. The reservoir and the filtration system are the rain converted into utility — storage and recharge, the language of a resupply rather than a shower. The rainbow canvas is what is left when it stops. And the year-long wait is the fact that makes the rest serious: this is not weather, it is an annual arrival on which a year depends. Its target is rain as a therapeutic agent.

It is retained at the first rung, Archive. It arrived legible, our readers divided along their usual lines, and nothing about our procedure had to change to receive it. Rung is not rank. What it leaves behind is a clean demonstration that a refrain can be a poem’s whole load-bearing structure — and one reversal worth keeping: a children’s rhyme that sends the rain away, rewritten to ask it to stay.
